Directorate General for Enterprise and Industry of the European Commission launched the first round of a competition European Enterprise Awards in 2006. National Agency for Development of Small and Medium Enterprises/ Enterprise Europe Network became the national contact point of the project in Slovakia.
The aim of the competetion is to highlight and award regional initiatives that support entrepreneurship at a regional level. It is designed for local and regional authorities, upper territorial units, private-public partnerships, educational institutions and companies from the European Union, and Norway. Candidates must show how their actions have incrementally facilitated business and boosted their region’s economy during the past two-years.
The Awards are handed out for excellence in five categories:
1. Promotion of entrepreneurial spirit
2. Improving the business environment
3. Responsible and inclusive entrepreneurship
4. Investing in skills
5. Supporting the intenralisation of business
and
Grand Jury Prize.
The jury at national levels selects two candidates which run for the Awards at the European level. The Grand Jury at Brussels decides on the total winners of the competition. The selection criteria are as follows:
- originality,
- transfereability
- impact on the local economy,
- improvement of the local stakeholder relation.

Slovakian success in Brussels
In 2006, the Special mention of the Jury went to the municipality of Slovenský Grob for their project Roast goose in Slovenský Grob to award their efforts to keep tradition alive.
